Invasion Season 3 will test the limits of humanity’s strength
If you’ve been keeping up with Apple TV+ originals in recent years, you might not be familiar with Invasion. That’s not too surprising: The sci-fi action drama series hasn’t generated the buzz of two other Apple TV+ series with similarly ambitious, high-concept premises: Silo and Foundation. It’s got a passionate fan base, but it’s also gotten mixed reviews from critics throughout its run, even bordering on the love/hate territory among its most ardent supporters.
It’s been praised for its cinematography and big thematic ambitions, even if its execution hasn’t always been there. And with Apple TV+ now releasing the trailer for season 3, it looks like the show will finally be firing on all cylinders.
The series Invasion is created by David Weil, best known as one of the creators of the critically acclaimed Netflix series Hunters, as well as Simon Kinberg, a multi-Emmy-nominated producer and screenwriter who made his name on several X-Men movies and then went on to write and produce the Oscar-nominated sci-fi flick The Martian. But Invasion’s major selling point has always been its intriguing approach to a tried-and-true sci-fi trope. The series follows a global alien invasion, but is told from the perspectives of average civilians around the world. This combination of English, Japanese, and Pashto language dialogue firmly grounds the universal nature of its premise.
The first season of Invasion doesn’t show the actual alien invasion; however, it’s more of a slow burn in the first half of the season, showing the mysterious origins of the extraterrestrial threat before it becomes imminent in the season finale. The result was that while the aliens were present in a few episodes, they often took a backseat to the very human story and drama between the show’s core characters, which some Invasion viewers were disappointed by. But it also defined a deliberate approach to Invasion as a drama with sci-fi elements, and an emphasis on character arcs over massive action set pieces and constant spectacle.
The first season ends on the note of the aliens invading en masse, and the second season picks up in that new, changed world, where the characters have to adjust to how the landscape of life on Earth has dramatically changed. This leads to an increased emphasis on action and big, high-stakes moments. The second season also featured more global action sequences and developments: while it had followed its characters from various locations around the world in the first season, the second season of Invasion featured more time spent with the characters as they made their way to different locations and met new allies. This change brought a necessary escalation to the show, giving it new energy and expanding on how each character was reacting to the changed world and trying to survive. This also paves the way for the all-important unification in the third season.
Season 3 of Invasion Brings the Characters Together for Intense Battle in Aliens’ Mothership
The trailer for season 3 shows a marked escalation from season 2 in both scope and danger, and the stakes have only grown more dire two years later. As per the official synopsis, season 3 of Invasion will feature a coming together of all the primary characters from the first two seasons for the first time, uniting for a top-secret mission to attempt to go aboard the alien mothership and find a way to save the world. The unification of the characters’ paths is a big turning point for the series that has focused so much on their disconnected and sometimes parallel storylines in previous seasons.
But it’s also notable that the aliens have evolved: what was described in the trailer as an “evolved form,” the aliens have begun sending out what the trailer calls “tentacles” that will race across the globe, killing off more of the human population in devastating new ways. That will only make the stakes for the third season of Invasion even higher, with clear and present danger for humanity only a matter of time. The battle against the “aliens’ newest apex” is going to take the full measure of our characters’ unique skills, knowledge, and resources, the trailer suggests. As our characters finally come together, it will also test their bonds and potentially create new alliances that could be both new challenges to the mission and potential resources.
The cast of Invasion is returning for season 3, featuring the core group of characters that audiences have been following for the past two years. Cast members that return include Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as divisive tech titan Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Joining the main cast for a new season is Erika Alexander, who was just recently announced as a regular on Invasion.
Story-wise, season 3 has the opportunity to bring together the big action and thriller elements that have been building across the two seasons, with the show’s core focus on character arcs and relationships. It’s also a perfect opportunity to provide some kind of satisfying conclusion to long-running story threads that might have been somewhat left in the dust in the second season as it moved faster, and to flesh out the exposition behind the series’ wider premise and the looming alien threat.
The third season of Invasion will premiere on August 22, 2025, on Apple TV+. Whether or not Invasion has what it takes to win over fans who might not be so invested remains to be seen, but for fans who have been with it since the beginning and have been waiting for just this kind of moment for two seasons, this new trailer suggests an Invasion unlike anything we’ve seen from the series thus far.
