Marvel Teases High-Stakes Tech Showdown in Ironheart
Ryan Coogler is having a banner year. He recently finished up production on his latest feature, Sinners, and is already hard at work on Marvel’s next limited series, Ironheart. As the studio released a new trailer in promotion of the upcoming series, the MCU’s next big hit, with the direction of Coogler, is starting to come into view.
Scheduled to release this summer in June of 2025, Ironheart is a six-episode series part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. The series will focus on Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart. The character is a teenage technology prodigy and Tony Stark protégé in the comics. Ironheart will serve as the final television entry in MCU Phase Five.
Ironheart was first revealed in December 2020, with a planned release in 2023. This schedule was later adjusted when Marvel changed its long-term content release strategy. A primary reason for the new release pace was due to concerns of market oversaturation, which resulted in a release this summer. Footage presented at the 2024 D23 event billed the series as “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center”, which was a marked shift from many other MCU television series into something darker and more grounded.
Riri Williams previously made her first live-action appearance in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In that movie, she accidentally becomes drawn into a conflict between Namor and the blue-skinned forces at his command after building a vibranium detector while studying at MIT. Throughout the film, Riri connects with Shuri over their shared love of science and ultimately builds an armored suit in the likeness of Iron Man to help Wakanda in its time of need. When the fighting is over, she is forced to leave her suit with the Wakandans and return to MIT to complete her studies.
A Tech-Centric Tale of Magic and Myth
The plot of Ironheart is set shortly after the events of Wakanda Forever. The official synopsis teases “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).”
Rounding out the star-studded cast are Lyric Ross as Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. The series will also feature Shea Couleé as a character named Slug. Jim Rash will reprise his role as MIT’s dean from his previous MCU appearance in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen is also confirmed as part of the cast, but Marvel has not offered up any details on the role at this time.
The trailer released for the series does not mince words. Riri is shown arriving at a pizza restaurant that is out of business. She is unable to leave the building due to the presence of an elevator filled with poison gas, with a two-minute countdown. The predicament turns out to be a test, or as the man behind it describes it as an “interview”, which was arranged by a man named The Hood. The Hood, over a speaker system, proclaims that she will be poisoned unless she breaks into a device mounted on the ground that contains a gas mask. Riri refuses to comply and instead engineers a creative escape plan.
Impressed by her ingenuity, The Hood offers to have her join him in an as-yet-unspecified endeavor that is not quite on the right side of the law. Riri, eager to show off her skills and create something “iconic” as she states, stutters before ultimately accepting the offer. Her choice alarms her friends, including Natalie, who is particularly vocal about her misgivings towards The Hood’s character. The Hood does have some valid points, especially after telling Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Ironheart looks as if it will be a series about the necessary evils of ambition, and how someone with the power and potential of Riri Williams could use or abuse that power to gain notoriety and “accomplish iconic things”. How much she is willing to sacrifice and bend the rules remains to be seen, but the series will at least get viewers to ask that question.
Marvel has stated that the first three episodes of Ironheart will hit Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the rest releasing weekly. A second season has not been ordered as of yet, but has not been ruled out pending the performance of the first season. Viewers will be able to get a first look at the action, suspense, and character development in the series from both the trailer and a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette.
Ironheart looks as if it could be the next big hit for the MCU, with Coogler’s past success of mixing big-budget action with a more intimate, grounded focus, and a strong showing from Thorne as the character of Riri Williams. By mixing the high-tech world of Iron Man with a street-level crime drama, the series could be one of the MCU’s more essential shows in the future.
