Strange New Worlds Season 3: Pike Chooses His Crew
Paramount+ has released the official trailer for season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The third season is set to premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Previously, only a short teaser trailer had been released in April.
The second season of Strange New Worlds ended with a cliffhanger as the Enterprise was brutally attacked by the Gorn, and several crew members and other hostages were taken captive. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was left with a dilemma: to heed Starfleet’s order to abandon the mission and the hostages or to disobey orders and attempt to rescue them. In typical Pike fashion, he chose the latter. Last October, fans were able to get a small preview of the season at New York City Comic-Con, which starts immediately from where the season 2 finale ended. It included a space battle sequence, one of the hallmarks of the show, as the Enterprise crew fights off the Gorn attack. The newly released trailer finally gives us a chance to see a continuation of that sequence, and while it confirms that the Gorn arc will finally resolve in the third season, it also teases the beginning of new perils and fresh adventures.
The third season will continue to be set under the command of Pike and the crew of the Enterprise. While the Gorn arc will reach a satisfying conclusion, they will also face a new adversary, one who will push them to the very limit, challenge their loyalties, and test their mettle. Paramount+ has confirmed that season 3 will expand the storytelling to include a variety of episodes that explore faith, duty, romance, comedy, and mystery.
0;Viewers can also expect some clear genre shifts — a type of episode storytelling not previously seen in the Star Trek series,0; adds Paramount+.
As usual, the returning cast of main and recurring characters will be reprising their roles, but there are several notable additions to the cast for season 3. Most prominent among them is Cillian O’ Sullivan, who will be playing the role of Dr. Roger Korby. The character was originally played by Michael Strong in Star Trek: The Original Series. Dr. Korby is an archaeologist with a specialty in medical archaeology and the long-lost fianc e9 of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) in the Strange New Worlds timeline. His sudden return will likely cause a lot of upheavals, both professional and personal, for the crew, especially Chapel, who has a blossoming relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).
Season 3 will also feature guest appearances by Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, two of the most well-known comedians of the past couple of decades. In the April teaser trailer, we get a glimpse of the genre variation promised by Paramount+ with at least one full-fledged action-adventure episode as well as a lighter side-story. In the new trailer, we get further confirmation of the varying tone of the season as it also shows the crew bonding over light-hearted moments of camaraderie, navigating prickly romantic storylines, and dealing with the messy fallout of a misfired science experiment.
James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is also seen briefly taking command of the Enterprise in the trailer. While his role in the overall story of the third season is yet to be revealed, it is clear that Kirk will be taking his role as captain very seriously, as he is soon to be put in that position. Pike does not make it easy on the young captain either, when he hands over the reins to Kirk, and says, 0;The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.0;
One of the most entertaining moments of the trailer is a rare comedic beat involving Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan character. After Spock demonstrates a 0;high five0; and succeeds at it, he is asked by Oswalt’s character to show a 0;down low0; instead. As expected, Spock then pulls off the classic 0;too slow0; move in response. Incredulous, the Vulcan asks, 0;Why would you do that?0; to which Spock replies casually, 0;Because you are too slow.0;
