Long Wait for Wednesday Worth It, Say Fans Online
Netflix has released the first look of Billie Piper in Wednesday season 2. At 42 years old, the British actress will join a long list of newcomers who have been cast in the second season of the series starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams. Piper, who will appear as Isadora Capri, will join a returning cast in the next chapter of the award-winning Netflix series. Billie Piper’s Wednesday character is already a figure of mystery; the actress is described as the “prodigy turned head of music at Nevermore,” and the fact that Wednesday Addams’ character takes an interest in her musical skills has left fans curious.
Billie Piper’s Gothy Resume Is Ideal for Wednesday
Billie Piper, who is best known for the role of Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein in the gothic drama Penny Dreadful, already has a strong list of gothic and supernatural roles to add to her resume. She is described as the ex-child prodigy who takes an interest in Wednesday’s music. The actress also appears to have a particular interest in werewolf student Enid Sinclair, played by returning cast member Emma Myers.
Piper’s first looks were posted by Netflix alongside some exciting news about the status of the record-breaking series. The show originally launched in November 2022 and quickly became a global hit. Wednesday was watched by 252 million viewers worldwide, making it Netflix’s largest English-language show to date. The series was renewed in January 2023, and the second season was set to release in August 2024.
Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, in a new supernatural adventure at Nevermore Academy, a school for the supernatural and the misfit. A dark spin on the iconic Addams Family, Wednesday combined horror, comedy, and classic teen rebellion with monstrous results. The Emmy-nominated show, which only ran for one season, earned legions of fans across the world.
Season 3 and a Wednesday Spin-Off Are in the Works
Billie Piper is not the only Wednesday news coming from Netflix. On top of the confirmed second season and confirmation of a new character, the streaming service has already renewed Wednesday for a third season. Netflix also revealed that a spin-off series is “in the works,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Co-creator Alfred Gough had this to say about the potential series: “It’s something that we’re noodling; there are other characters in that world that we can take a look at.” Fans on social media have been overwhelmingly positive in reaction to the news. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams in Wednesday, confirmed the third season on her own: “When Wednesday comes a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official…we shall return.” Fans left comments under the post, such as “And for many more seasons,” and “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity…and the third is already official, fantastic news!”
Fans on social media are holding their breath to hear when the second season will be filming. After its first season, which will be released on Netflix in August, some fans are worried about the gap between seasons. The second installment was announced in January 2023, but it will have arrived more than two years after the series first premiered. Fans are calling for the wait to be shorter in future seasons, and one fan wrote, “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please…don’t let us wait three years again.”
As for the continuation of the series, Tim Burton, 66, is set to return as an executive producer and periodic director. Burton recently worked with Ortega again in Beetlejuice, the upcoming sequel to the original 1988 cult film.
Season 2 will also have new faces in the form of Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. The likes of Gwendoline Christie as headteacher Larissa Weems and Luis Guzmán as Wednesday’s father Gomez Addams are set to return for the next season.
Lead actress Ortega is now a producer following her increased interest behind the scenes. This new role comes after an interview with Ortega sparked controversy in which she expressed her dissatisfaction with the show and had to “put my foot down” on occasions when her lines were changed. Burton stepped forward in support of Ortega after the interview was released and insisted her comments were taken out of context. Gough, Wednesday’s co-creator, has also defended the actress and noted her producer title fits because the star was already heavily involved in the show, regularly giving script notes.
Joanna Lumley, one of the stars added to the season 2 cast, shared her thoughts on being part of the universe: “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore, and the family is just intoxicating.”
