Rapper Snoop Dogg is embroiled in another online controversy after lashing out against LGBTQ+ representation in children’s films, including Pixar’s Lightyear. In an interview with Sarah Fontenot for her It’s Giving podcast, the rapper spoke about taking his grandson to see the new Pixar movie, and “not being able to come to this because I don’t know what the s— to tell him.” Lightyear is a spinoff of the Toy Story franchise, which introduces the character of Buzz Lightyear as a real-life space explorer, rather than as a child’s toy. When Snoop Dogg’s grandson asked him how two women could make a baby together, the rapper told Fontenot that he didn’t know how to respond.
“The whole time he was like, ‘Papa Snoop, how she has a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” he explained. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”
Snoop added that he had to tell his grandson to “hold up and keep watchin’,” as he had no idea how to answer his question. “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he told Fontenot. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”
The rapper’s comments come as Lightyear has already come under fire from conservative commentators and audiences for featuring a lesbian couple. The character making the kiss happened to be Steme, the movie’s lead character, and the moment did not make the final cut at Disney after concerns were raised. However, after Disney employees spoke out and a call for the scene’s reinstatement, it was brought back into the film, as well as other diversity-increasing adjustments. Steme and another character, as well as their child, are confirmed as a same-sex couple in the movie.
PinkNews reported that Snoop Dogg is set to perform at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final this year, and AFL boss Gillon McLachlan issued a response defending the decision not to ban the rapper for his comments. “I haven’t spoken to Snoop personally, but at the moment we have every intention of him performing at the Grand Final, if that’s what he chooses to do,” the AFL chief executive said.
It’s not the first time Lightyear has faced criticism over its approach to LGBTQ+ representation. Conservative media and audiences had criticized the film when the same-sex kiss was included in the film, with some conservative figures saying that such content was too explicit for children’s media. After conservatives online and media personalities began slamming Lightyear for featuring a same-sex relationship in its cast, Disney briefly cut the moment from the film’s official version. Pixar staff and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups rebuked the move, calling for the moment to be restored, and Disney relented and brought it back in, as well as other LGBTQ+ representation boosts.
Chris Evans, the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the movie, weighed in at the time and was not afraid to be direct when it came to voicing his displeasure at those criticizing the approach. In an interview with Reuters Television, Evans said the following about critics of the LGBTQ+ moment: “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
Lightyear is a film that centers on Buzz Lightyear in a world where he is a real-life space-age sci-fi hero, rather than a plastic toy. The inspiration for the character’s toy version in the original Toy Story is a highly revered figure who has actual spaceship travel technology. The character of Buzz is voiced in the film by Chris Evans, and due to both the connection to Toy Story and the pedigree of the voice actors, the film had a lot of built-in hype. Despite this, Lightyear has performed weakly at the box office, earning just over $226 million worldwide on expectations of a much stronger performance. With an already troubled launch, it appears Snoop Dogg’s comments will only fuel the fire.
Reaction to the Snoop Dogg comments came quickly, with the usual share of conservative viewers supportive and progressive voices decrying his remarks. On the LGBTQ+ side, the artist has already received flak for comments he made in the past. In an interview with The Daily Beast in 2020, the rapper was asked about pronouns and made dismissive comments which riled the left, including: “F— you and your pronouns and your bull—- s—.”
